FOOD SECURITY IN URBAN AREAS – THE CONSUMPTION SIDE

Dear All,

I am looking for information on research and/or practice related to food security in urban areas, with attention to the consumption side – and special attention to the access of (vulnerable) urban workers to food.

I am aware that there is a lot going on in regard to the production side of food security – both in urban and rural areas. I.e. increase urban and peri-urban agriculture, support to markets and food vendors, etc.

While increase in food production and commerce will of course impact positively on food security; there is also a substantial amount of workers with limited access to food in cities and towns where there is no shortage of food. In other words, these people simply do not have the means to properly access food which is already available – or have to spend a substantial part of their income on food only, in detriment of other basic needs.

This is what I am looking at – i.e. how to increase the accessibility of (vulnerable)urban workers to food.

Thanks in advance for any info, best, Ed Werna (e-mail: totaldidi@yahoo.com)
